Your first video requires the most courage because you have no sense of what will happen.
You feel like an imposter. You’re unsure of yourself. You don’t like how you sound or how you look on camera.
The thing is:
This is completely normal.
Almost everyone goes through this in the beginning. Your first step is your biggest one. It’s where you go from nothing to something.
That something might not be great, but that’s perfectly fine.
If you never gather the courage to make that first video, the next one won’t be made either.
Or the next one.
Or the next one.
And if you don’t make all those videos, you’ll never earn the experience, make the mistakes, and create the experiments that little by little stack up to transform you into a decent video creator.
Then a good one.
Then a great one.
If you never start, you’ll never get the compounding effects of creating the first 10, 50, 100 videos.
The most important thing is to get started.
Here’s what will actually happen when you upload that first video:
Nothing.
You won’t get a million views. You won’t have villagers with torches and pitchforks in your comment section.
People simply don’t care that much.
The story is the same for me and everyone I’ve talked to: The first video never goes anywhere.
Because it’s not very good. You don’t know who your audience is. You may not know what your channel is about. You don’t know how to package your video with a great title and thumbnail.
There’s a lot you don’t know.
But if you never start, you’ll never learn.
And that’s why your first video is the most and least important video you’ll make.
How to make your first video
So here’s how I recommend you make your first video:
Step 1:
Take your smartphone out of your pocket and start recording. Smile at the camera and say:
Hi and welcome to my YouTube channel.
My name is [name], and this is my first video.
I don’t know what my channel will be about, but I’m super excited to get started.
I hope to see you around.
Step 2:
Upload your video.
Congratulations! You’re on your way to somewhere interesting! 🥳
